WHAT CANARY |
|
karabuklukanaryaci bildirdi: "Canaries are still the birds most commonly kept and bred in captivity. Canaries can be divided into three main groups: colour, type and singing canaries. The main feed for these birds consists of a well-balanced seed mix, preferably adapted to the seasons, the breed and the bird's temperament.
There are colour canaries with a yellow, red or white ground colour. The yellow canary is a very popular cage and aviary bird. A male is often kept for its song. Adding a red pigment based on Canthaxanthin to the eggfood and/or drinking water strengthens the natural colour of the red canary. In addition to these ground colours, canaries may also have black or brown melanin pigments in their plumage. The quantity and position of these pigments in the feathers define the final colour of the canary: brown, Isabel, phaeo, pastel, agate, opal, satinette, topaz, eumo... A combination of one or more of these factors may result in hundreds of different colours, which can be found at specialised breeders and shows. For example the green canary is actually a combination of the yellow ground colour and the pure black melanin pigment.
The shape and plumage are more important with type canaries than the colour. The form may differ greatly: from huge (Yorkshire, Norwich...) to tiny (Five Fancy, Raza Espagnola...) or humpbacked (Belgian fancy, Japan Hoso, Munchener...). All breeds with special feathering can be included in this group: with curled feathers (Parisian Frill and Northern Dutch Frill, Giboso Espanol, Gibber Italicus, Fiorino...) or with a crest (Gloster 'Coronas' and 'Consorts', Crested, Lancashire, etc.). There is a standard per type, which one attempts to achieve as closely as possible during breeding.
The colour and posture play a side role with the singing canaries. The important thing for these birds is their song. There are various types of singing canaries: e.g. the Harzer Roller, the Belgian Waterslager or Malinois, the Timbrado... The quality of the songs of each bird is tested separately at song contests.
